Golden Globe Style for Prom 2012!

I see lots of great prom ideas on Pintrest- everything from dresses & accessories to great hairstyles.

It's becoming the one place to find the best of everything!

I found this gorgeous royal blue gown this morning ...

At Twigs, when consulting with a prom customer we suggest bringing their dress in

or at least a picture of the dress-

As designers we look for more than just the color when designing a corsage.

This dress, with it's dramatic asymmetrical neckline and beading needs a corsage that will play up those great details.

This white calla corsage is also asymmetrical. The custom wire cuff wraps around the wrist like the dress wraps up and over the shoulder. To customize this corsage even further- the pearls could be replaced with silver beads or rhinestones.

Shown below is a second option- This one is designed with deep blue Delphinium florets and delicate white Roses and fragrant Freesia. The sparkly silver tinsel thread picks up the silver detail in the gown beautifully with out being too over powering.

This year surprise your prom date with a stylish boutonniere!

The boutonniere has come a long way from it's 16th century roots...

"boutonniere" is the French word for "buttonhole flower." Initially, the purpose of wearing a boutonniere was to ward off bad luck or evil. During the 18th & 19th centuries men became more fashionable and the boutonniere, usually a single bloom tucked in the top buttonhole of a suit jacket, became an important part of a man's attire- as important as his freshly shined shoes.

Today it is still an important part of a man's attire during special occasions such as a wedding

and of course ... PROM!

Shown below are three contemporary designs that use a magnet instead of a pin.

Green is a great neutral color that will go with anything- just like the traditional white... only better!

New for Prom 2012- the new neutral.. GREEN

I love the circular shapes shown below- the ring is created with colored wire wrapped with bear grass. If you guy is not wanting to 'wear a flower' this would be a great solution.

The Bout at the top is created by using Hypericum Berries (also available in red) attached to a simple backing. The striking Cymbidium Orchid is simply attached using floral adhesive.

Its that time of year when we need to look and see the upcoming trends for 2012. Below you will see how the 2012 Fitz Design Prom Line of floral jewelry compliments the 2012 Prom Trends.

Rosettes - Every where we look we are seeing Rosettes - from dresses to purses... and even the wristlets. Check out the new “Diamond Rose” Collection from Fitz Design.

Color of the Year - Orange! Well, officially according to the wonderful folks at Pantone it is called “Tangerine Tango” - but us Average Janes just plain call it orange. When Proms hit England...

When I was a teenager leaving school, we had a leavers disco which was held in the school hall and if I remember correctly I did not even go. I know that the very fact that I am talking about it this way means that you know I am old....... er than some of you.

But then the American style prom hit the next generation...... limousines, make up, hair up, hair down, eyelashes tinted, eyebrows waxed and not to mention the DRESS.... the wonderful prom dress that has to be different, has to be perfect, has to be just right!! Prom goers don't know where they are going, they have to have a passport, and a date and OMG (as they say) prom day is planned like a wedding with all the usual trimmings and more.

So something is missing right??? Yeah right!! The flowers, the English girls forgot about the flowers... how could they? How could they not realise that a wrist corsage of beautiful Roses or Orchids adorned with diamante, pearl and ribbon can help to set you apart from the crowd.

However, slowly but surely we are changing that and whilst our corsage orders are not huge, they are there and year on year they are getting that bit more adventurous. I am educating our girls and their mums one by one. It is going to be a long process but by hook or by crook we will get there.

So, what do our girls like? Well, like all girls in general, they like diamante, they like pearls. They like satin ribbon looped and draped. They like a single Gerbera daisy or a spray of delicate Roses. A funky Phalanopsis Orchid or a vintage Ranunculous.

But for me, a picture tells a thousand words so here are some of the designs we have come up with for our English girls.....

Ho-hum, white roses,.. again?

#1 - Don't be afraid to work with colorful flowers.

Just like the newest looks in prom dress are featuring bold patterns and vibrant tones, your flowers can have the same personality. This lovely couple wanted a little *pop* of color against their simple black attire. Tinted blue orchids added that fun accent they were looking for!

When should I order my prom flowers?

A good rule of thumb would be to order your flowers around the same time you either

choose your dress or order your tux .

You may be thinking,..

“Wow- that’s really early for fresh flowers! “

In fact this is not early at all- florists need to reserve those flowers well in advance of the actual prom date to ensure there are enough for the orders they will receive.
You need to remember, from the end of March to about mid June is prom season, that means flowers used for corsages and boutonnieres are in high demand.

Doesn’t it make sense to make sure the special color or flower variety you need is available and reserved just for you?

Just like flowers, ribbons, colored wire, and jeweled accessories such as color rhinestone sprays and fancy beaded bracelets are also in high demand.

Popular accessories are often sold out as the height of the season approaches.

Time is also in short supply , especially for one of a kind custom designs. These designs (shown below) look very simple but actually take more time than a basic wrist corsage!

You may be disappointed if you wait too long to order a custom design such as this one. The florist in your area may be strapped for time- especially if you have waited until the day or two before prom!

(You wouldn't do that would you?)

It's also a possibility your local florist may not have on hand the supplies needed or specialty flowers such as the orange Vanda orchids used in the arm band design.

Give your florist as much time as you can - especially when everything needs to be perfect!

Prom Flowers - Twist and Sprout!

While prom season may be over for some folks, here in Central Massachusetts, we still have 2 weeks to go. With so many schools, prom season starts mid-March and lasts till the end of May - whew!

At Sprout this year, we were asked if we could put some prom flowers together for a photo shoot. With photos of dresses to go on, we let ourselves run wild! This sweet red ranunculus and baby's breath nosegay was given the most up to date and modern treatment by framing the ranunculus with a collar of baby's breath and silver wire. Nosegays are a great option that will last in a vase of water long after prom night.

Not every prom flower needs to be a wrist corsage. This purple and white set of flowers are a flower tattoo which is stuck onto a shoulder (great with those one shouldered dresses!) and a floral hair clip. Feathery touches take flowers to a new level. :-)

Vintage is hot in weddings and this year the look trickled down to the prom going crowd with soft satiny ribbons and amazing keepsake bracelets that look like they came right from the vintage store.

Peacock tones are everywhere, so why not peacock feathers?! We have feathers in all colors, but the natural ones are a great fit with the lime cymbidium orchid wrist corsage and matching boutonniere.

Prom Flowers with Versatility and Functionality

Here at Gillespie Florists, we have been offering Fitz wristlets and other keepsake products for three years running. Every year we are surprised at not only how many keepsake wristlets we sell but also the unique uses for the Fitz products!

This year we had a young man come in looking for an alternative wristlet. He was asked if he was looking for something new to this year or a unique design. He was having a hard time explaining what he wanted. He said he wanted a wrist corsage but that it simply wouldn’t work. He was showed some of our more unusual corsages, such as Wild Side and Pink Ice

Wild Side is three yellow sweet heart roses put in a triangular design with zebra ribbons hanging off the side of the wrist. It is accented with seeded eucalyptus and limonium and is attached to a black and silver Fitz beaded wristlet!

Pink Ice has three pink sweet heart roses with a delicate silver bow and rhinestone sprays. These beautiful roses are attached to one of the new cascade wristlets made by Fitz. The new cascade wristlets are rhinestones that appear to be cascading from your wrist, across the top of your hand and finishes off with a delicate strand meeting the middle finger with a rhinestone topped ring!

Our customer liked these corsages and many of our other designs but we could tell it was not quite right. We were stumped; he was not communicating the real issue that would help us solve the problem.

Finally, he told us his date had only one arm. He didn’t get into details as to what had happened but he wanted to make sure that she had a great and memorable prom. He felt like that a wrist corsage would get in her way and hinder her movements. The thought of getting her a pin-on corsage made him cringe. He needed something that was functional but made her feel included, special and beautiful.

Now, with understanding, we knew the perfect corsage for her!

Callista has five lavender sweet heart roses, lovely silver ribbon, small silver leaves and beads. All adorned to a prom silver armband with swirls and large rhinestones.

He loved it! It was unique enough to make her feel special but close enough to a wrist corsage that she wouldn’t feel out of place!

Year after year, we at Gillespie Florists come up with many new prom designs for reasons just like this! Everyone wants a corsage that will fit her personal style and needs. For us to meet that, we need versatility in our collection!

What a busy busy couple of weeks!

Prom orders ready for flowers

We started ordering new ribbons and bracelets in March &

we also started making the wire free form cuffs that were so popular this year.

In the week before prom we carefully combined the bracelets, ribbons and selected

rhinestones or bead sprays to make the corsage base on which the

flowers were eventually attached.

This dictates the direction of the conversation and questions that will follow.

Many girls are looking to match the color of their dress and although that is one way to go, some

colors are difficult to match. Look for complimentary colors to your dress. Shades of your color are a great way to go and give more dimension and texture to your corsage.

It's also important to remember that multi-color corsages compliment a solid color dress beautifully, while corsages in all one color (monochromatic) are best with the beautiful print dresses so popular this year.

I find that when a customer has a dress that doesn't have a rose color that matches perfectly, the customer always falls back to that faithful white rose.

There are many other great flowers that can be used in corsages.

Take a look at orchids, freesia, mini-gerberas, and gladiolus blooms, all come in a wide range of colors. You would be surprised!

Prom Flowers in the Deep South

Here in sunny and warm Alabama, things are still quite traditional and conservative. Although the staff at the House of Flowers leads our area in offering more progressive designs for any occasion, our local high school girls still prefer a more standard and traditional flower design for their prom, which is quite ironic considering the styles of the dresses these days! Wrist corsages are the most popular choice by far, with hand held or clutch bouquets becoming a little more accepted each year.

This year, we offered a choice when ordering wrist corsages...either “traditional” or “funky”. The traditional corsage is rather conservative and focuses on flowers...nothing flashy or gaudy. Our girls here prefer small corsages with no ribbons hanging down, thus the corsage is very compact. And we’ve made it easier for both the flower shop and the high school kids...we simply get the color of the dress, then promise to deliver something that would be appropriate. We no longer go through the time consuming processes of choosing the flower varieties, the ribbons, or any accessories at the time the order is placed. As a result, the kids and their parents seem happier, and the staff at the shop spends less time on each order, which makes me happier!

Our “Funky” wrist corsages will incorporate decorative wire, feathers, berries, and playful ribbons that will give a little more modern look, while still maintaining the conservative appeal

All of our wrist corsages are designed on bracelets from Fitz Designs, and we’ve found that the fanciest and nicest bracelets sell out first, even when they cost a few dollars extra.

Our clutch bouquets have gained in popularity over the years. It reminds me of my time in high school in the late 70s and 80s when every flower that my parents made were nosegays in a plastic bouquet holder. However, these clutch bouquets are hand tied and the stems are wrapped with ribbon...a very natural look, as if you picked flowers from the garden just moments ago.

The most popular clutch designs this year incorporate two new elements that have never been available here before...wire bouquet collars and painted Tree Fern. The House of Flowers is the only florist in the states of Alabama or Georgia that carries the Color Fresh Tree Fern, which looks much like feathers, but it is actually fresh foliage that is treated with a dyed preservative. It comes in twelve different colors.

The price ranges for our wrist corsages average from $24.95 - $34.95, while our clutch bouquets average from $29.95 - $59.95.

A lot of people are amazed at how many hand tied "clutch" prom bouquets we create compared to wrist corsages. Yes, here at Belvedere Flowers in Havertown PA, we do 90% bouquets, and only 10% wrist corsages for proms!

Sometimes you just need to start your own trend.

About 10 years ago, I started to offer hand tied bouquets instead. Over the years, more and more prom customers started asking for them, instead of corsages :)

Our biggest prom is Haverford High School, however we also do a lot of prom flowers for about a dozen other nearby schools in Delaware County, and the Philadelphia area. I've talked to other florists in the area, and they still sell more wrist corsages, but they are also seeing a trend for more hand tied bouquets.

Most of our customers give us the creative freedom to design something beautiful for them. We get the dress color, and then suggest a monochromatic bouquet, or mixed colors to compliment the dress color.

Our prom bouquets range from $30-75, and the average customer spends around $45-50.

This year, consider wearing your flowers in your hair. A simple flower tucked behind the ear or something more elaborate can be custom designed by many florists when you order early.

If you're not comfortable wearing something on your wrist all night (especially if you're plans include a nice dinner) then a flower or custom floral piece is a great alternative.

Take a look at a few of the new corsage ideas for the 2011 prom season!
Pictured below is a simple, yet very glamorous wrist corsage with a yellow rose as the focal point, and a simple leaf made spectacular with a few well placed rows of crystals.

Here is an elegant white free form corsage designed with super fragrant white freesia and baby's breath. A little touch of color is added with tiny pink blooms such as wax flower. Small sparkly gems or colorful beads would look great here too. Change the look even more by using a colorful beaded bracelet.

I'm really loving this unique belt bracelet! (my favorite so far) What a great piece of jewelry even after prom. Here this wrist corsage is designed with simplicity. Only one rose bloom and the smallest of accents are used so the unique belt design is not hidden.

Here is a fun fresh twist on your basic black and white wrist corsage and boutonniere. Placing green pearl beads in clusters with the simple white flowers gives this basic white wrist corsage a little punch of color that is still neutral enough to go well with any other color. Notice how the black stone accents inside the flowers draw attention to the black and crystal bracelet.

For someone who doesn't like too much girly fluff and ribbons- try this stacked look (shown below) Different geometric floral shapes and textures are stacked for a uniquely modern wrist corsage. This one uses bright primary colors, but a monochromatic stack would look great too.

I love the elegant simplicity of this peach and white wrist corsage. Just a little ribbon accent is all that is needed to give this design softness and femininity. It includes keepsake flower jewels and is designed on a beautiful pearl and crystal bead bracelet.White pearl beads in and around the roses and orchids finish the look.
